AME Computer System Requirements

FAA Requirements Effective October 1999

This is the official minimum list of hardware and software required by the FAA and posted back in 1999. Most AMEs require much more modern systems to function efficiently. In addition, the FAA does not get involved in running the business aspects of your practice. All modern requirements such as Internet Presence, promotion and advertising are left to the individual AME or his/her practice managers, see equipment page for required professional medical equipment.

The new Internet-based system requirements will accommodate any computer system, regardless of operating system and/or platform, as long as it is capable of supporting:

  • An Internet Protocol (IP) dial-up or local area network connection
  • An Internet Service Provider (ISP) to provide the IP dial-up or network connection
  • Browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer® (version 4.0 or higher), or Netscape Navigator® (version 4.0 or higher), capable of 128-bit encryption.

When considering a new computer system or upgrade, we recommend that, for maximum performance, you consider the latest computer industry standards and models. While the AMCS Internet version is completely platform independent, testing has shown that productivity is maximized when using either Microsoft Internet Explorer® (version 4.0 or higher) or Netscape Navigator® (version 4.0 or higher) running under Windows 95/98/NT. The Internet-based AMCS will meet the Year 2000 requirements and will improve performance, reliability, and access.

Minimum AMCS System Requirements (listed system components will work satisfactorily but may produce considerably slower than desired performance):

  • Intel-based or clone - 100MHz Pentium processor
  • Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT operating system
  • 16 megabytes of RAM
  • 20 megabytes available hard drive space
  • 28K baud modem or better

Recommmended AMCS System Requirements:

  • Intel-based or clone - 233MHz Pentium processor or faster
  • Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT operating system
  • 64 megabytes of RAM or greater
  • 20 megabytes available hard drive space
  • 56K baud modem or better(cable modem, ISDN, T-1, T-3, etc)
